Sasha Harlequin Doll – Trenton 1984
This is a Sasha Harlequin Doll – Trenton that was produced in 1984 by the Trendon/Sasha Dolls Ltd of Stockport, England owned by the Doggarts and distributed by International Playthings in the US. Sasha dolls were created by the late Sasha Morgenthaler (1893 – 1975), a Swiss artist and artisan. She was also a humanitarian and a keen observer of all the world’s children. Her vision was to create dolls that represented and reflected the spirit of children of all races and cultures during their age of innocence. Harlequin was planned to be a limit edition of 4000 but the first production of 2500 dolls worldwide is believed to be what was produced and this is number 1944. This doll is MINT in box with the exception of her sandals . The snaps on the sandals have turned green which is a common dilemma with Harlequin. Several years ago I read about problem and took the shoes off and wrapped them separately so the doll has not been stained green as many are.
Sasha has some unique features: they have beautifully stylized body parts that are in quarter scale, asymmetrical, and in realistic proportion, like real humans. They are perfectly balanced and can assume many poses without a doll stand – they can even stand on their heads! Their skin colorings are blends of all skin colorings, to represent all the children of the world, and they have individually hand painted faces with receptive expressions, each one ready to reflect whatever mood its child will give it.
In the early 80’s I worked for International Playthings and began my love and collection of Sasha’s. I am happy to be able to share one of my Sasha’s on this site. I will include a wonderful bibliography I found on the internet with the provenance.
