Squatch Customized Munny by Laurelin Gilmore is creative look at a Northern California legend “Big Foot, with a OOAK original art. This customized Munny is mixed media fun at 9” tall! Laurelin is one of Sacramento’s most promising artists and Art Of Toys is proud to include her creative work often.
My subject matter can be somewhat varied, but the figure has always been my touchstone. I began as a pencil artist and grew into painting as my primary medium, both of these art forms allowing me to explore widely varying subject matter. I’ve often said that I feel like a completely different artist in different mediums. My drawings are fairly straightforward figures in their environment with some playful variations. My paintings use a lot of symbolism and metaphor, fantasy and suggestion. And a few years ago I thought I might like to hold one of the creatures I paint, so began to explore sculpting and assemblage. People, this is kid in candy store kind of fun.
The wall-hung pieces I’ve made for this show including the three Legend of the Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing pieces and the Pig’s Ornithopter are very personal to me, though I hope not unique to me. I have only ever wanted to be an artist, as far back as I can remember, but life nudges a person and I ended up a cubicle jockey in a pretty solid State job instead. Life nudged again and I left my job in 2010 to take the risk and see if I could actually be an artist full time. Long story short: this little piggy built an ornithopter because she believed she could fly. I hope these pieces inspire, encourage and delight you as much as they do me.
