Soft Sculpture Monster “Floss”, or better yet “Forgot to Floss” by Textile Artist Terri Rehg is a vivid description that perfectly captures the grotesque yet whimsical charm of Terri Rehg’s signature textile art style, her highly distinct technique of blending hand-stitched felt, detailed bloodshot eyes, and expressive mouths can be seen across her broader collection of mounted wall monsters.

Floss is a three-dimensional, puppet-like face made from stitched felt and various craft materials, mounted on a diamond-shaped wood background decorated with wood green, swirling tendril and black wood stars on sides. The face is constructed from light peach-colored felt with visible hand stitching embroidery along the seams. A mass of bright, curly orange yarn forms the hair and thick, prominent eyebrows. The character has highly asymmetrical, expressive eyes. The left eye is wide, bloodshot, and features a detailed blue iris. The right eye is smaller, heavily hooded, squinting, and also shows bloodshot veins. The bloodshot veins are a signature on Terri’s monster pieces. A large, bulbous stitched nose dominates the center of the face, flanked by bright pink felt circles for cheeks sprinkled with freckles. The wide-open mouth reveals numerous individual, decaying teeth nestled inside the gums with a red tongue thrusting out.

Sprayed with Scotch guard for a protection and ready to hang.

Artist Statement: Discovering the faces that live within the canvas with the stroke of a needle is a journey with each piece created. It all starts with the eyes and builds from there and magically a new creature is born. The series in gray was first conceptualized as a canvas piece to paint on but so much came from the stark gray that the series continues to grow each piece totally different and unique.

Terri has been creating toys since she was a child and studied Textiles in school. Learning the craft of the toy maker is a dream that has taken a life time to achieve and now is able to incorporate into her artwork.. The oldest of eight children she has been “Sister” to a wonderful tight knit family that shares many artists in their flock. Pre2022 signed her work as “Sis”.
