Punch and Judy at Art Of Toys for the month of September’s Puppet show has brought some interesting comments from artists and gallery customers. The Punch and Judy show is one of the longest running puppet shows thou rarely performed in the USA…huge still in England. Some of the characters from this show have been included from artists Daunine Vining and Terri Rehg.
VIOLENCE is the name of the game in this show, from whacking to the next! When artist Kristina McClanahan did the wall lettering she had quite a time choosing nonoffensive statements to highlight the art from an old script. The characters make great art statements on their own due to the extreme features…most noteworthy, large chins and beak noses on the main characters.
Punch and Judy is a traditional, popular, and usually very violent puppet show featuring Mr. Punch and his wife, Judy. The performance consists of a sequence of short scenes, each depicting an interaction between two characters, most typically Mr Punch and one other character (who usually falls victim to Mr. Punch’s club). It is often associated with traditional British seaside culture. The various episodes of Punch and Judy are performed in the spirit of outrageous comedy — often provoking shocked laughter — and are dominated by the anarchic clowning of Mr. Punch. Wikipedia
