Toy Rescue to Robot Art
My journey into Cigar Box Art started as did the plein air painters, using the box tops for quick studies, and small oil paintings; but it soon morphed into using the whole Cigar Box as a more dimensional and sculptural art piece. When the news hit that some smaller toys were considered a choking hazard, and parents and schools were getting rid of them, my toy rescue took off. Parents, children, Sunday Schools, and pre-schools began giving me tiny toys to use in my art.
I have used cartoons in my large paintings for years, and so the Cigar Box Art work has drawings on the outside and inside under the lids. In some pieces there are toys added inside like a shadow box. The next step evolved when I began carving images for the tops; and my most recent cut wood constructions are Robots.
