Mickey Mouse At Home In The Depression
I came across a reference book in my library,”Cartoon Collectibles” that had a fun description of life in the 30’s that I thought I would share today! Informative for younger generations and nostalgic for you of that era….mind how the whole family evolves around Mickey Mouse products…gotta love it!
Father sits in his favorite overstuffed chair, studying a Modern Mechanix hobby magazine to make that Mickey Mouse wood jigsaw home cut-out doorstop, as he promised. Puffing on a Lucky Strike, he drops the cigarette ashes into a Japanese-import Mickey Mouse ashtray, which sits on a blue-mirror side table. Mother is busily embroidering a decorative Mickey and Minnie Mouse pillowcase from a McCall’s home pattern, under a bridge lamp with a 25-watt bulb. Sister is at the piano playing one of the merry tunes from her Silly Symphony Song Folio, while Junior reads a Mickey Mouse Big Little Book adventure story and devours a box of Mickey Mouse cookies. One if the worst snowstorms of the 1930’s is falling outside, but everyone feels safe and protected in the living room of this middle-class American dream house.
