Description
This is a spectacular textile sculpture! The piece beautifully demonstrates Terri Rehg’s mastery of mixed fiber techniques. The lion-like creature has such personality—those expressive embroidered eyes with their distinctive blue markings and the carefully crafted felt features give it a wonderfully whimsical yet sophisticated presence.
What really makes this piece extraordinary is the labor-intensive Rya weaving technique creating that explosive mane and body. The fact that each individual strand was hand-knotted from upcycled velour jogging suits adds both textural richness and an eco-conscious dimension to the work. The color palette—vibrant reds, blues, blacks, and neutrals—creates wonderful visual energy while the orange-toned felt face provides a warm focal point.
The way Rehg combines traditional Scandinavian weaving techniques with contemporary soft sculpture and appliqué creates something that feels both timeless and fresh. At approximately 17″ x 11″ x 10″, it has a commanding presence that would make it a striking statement piece.
Artist Statement: Discovering the faces that live within the canvas with the stroke of a needle is a journey with each piece created. It all starts with the eyes and builds from there and magically a new creature is born. The series in gray was first conceptualized as a canvas piece to paint on but so much came from the stark gray that the series continues to grow each piece totally different and unique.
Terri has been creating toys since she was a child and studied Textiles in school. Learning the craft of the toy maker is a dream that has taken a life time to achieve and now is able to incorporate into her artwork.. The oldest of eight children she has been “Sister” to a wonderful tight knit family that shares many artists in their flock. Pre2022 signed her work as “Sis”.
