Description

This whimsical piece is Ignar Dragon, a one-of-a-kind three-dimensional soft sculpture created by textile artist Terri Rehg. It belongs to a broader series of playful, faux-taxidermy monster and creature mounts handmade from mixed media and felt. The three-dimensional piece is constructed primarily from textured fabrics and felt that feature a faux-taxidermy style sculpture of a red dragon’s head emerging from an ornate, gilded picture frame.

The main head structure is a vibrant red, covered in layered, scale-like fabric cutouts that create depth along the snout and crest. The snout transitions into a contrasting bright orange fabric. Two large, curved horns made of a cream-colored felt protrude upwards from the top of the head. A prominent, stylized eye is crafted with concentric circles of green and blue fabric, detailed with fine stitched patterns representing the iris. The dragon’s mouth is slightly open, revealing small, white shell triangle teeth and a long, pointed pink fabric tongue extending downwards.

The sculpture is mounted so it appears to be physically stepping out of a classic rectangular gold frame with decorative filigree carvings, backed by a solid black interior.The overall style combines a playful, handmade fiber-art aesthetic with a traditional hunting trophy presentation.

Artist Statement: Discovering the faces that live within the canvas with the stroke of a needle is a journey with each piece created. It all starts with the eyes and builds from there and magically a new creature is born. The series in gray was first conceptualized as a canvas piece to paint on but so much came from the stark gray that the series continues to grow each piece totally different and unique.

Terri has been creating toys since she was a child and studied Textiles in school. Learning the craft of the toy maker is a dream that has taken a life time to achieve and now is able to incorporate into her artwork.. The oldest of eight children she has been “Sister” to a wonderful tight knit family that shares many artists in their flock. Pre2022 signed her work as “Sis”.
