Description

Behold the king of all he surveys—a magnificent, rotund monarch adorned with found treasures. Junk King Monster sits in regal repose, his substantial presence commanding attention. Those amber eyes gleam with benevolent authority beneath a crown-like cap, while dimensional facial features—wrinkles, bushy brows, and a prominent nose—give him the weathered wisdom of an ancient ruler. Draped in “royal jewels” of buttons, charms, and trinkets strung across his chest, he wears his accumulated treasures with pride. That single shell tooth adds a touch of roguish charm to his otherwise dignified bearing.

About the Piece

The first creation in Terri Rehg’s celebrated Gray Series, Junk King Monster holds special significance as the piece that launched this entire monochromatic collection. Featured in the 2024 Textile Show at Morris Graves Museum in Eureka, CA, this foundational work demonstrates Terri’s vision for dimensional canvas sculpture. At 27 inches seated, he’s the largest and most commanding presence in the series—a true patriarch of the monster gaggle.

About the Artist

Terri Rehg is a California-based textile artist who creates whimsical characters, monsters, and dragons using mixed media. Drawing on her years in the toy industry and time working for Disney, she explores the open-ended realm of fantasy imagination through what she calls her “laboratory of quirky.” Her work combines soft sculpture, embroidery, and sculpting techniques to create creatures that blur the line between textile art and dimensional storytelling. The oldest of eight children in a tight-knit artistic family, she formerly signed her work as “Sis” (pre-2022).
